Charity Projects

At Specs of Kensington we are committed to supporting charity. Over the years we have raised lots of money by participating in fun runs and other sponsored events. We also take a more hands on approach by getting involved in charity projects.

Elaine Styles started volunteering for the Opticians service at the Crisis Christmas back in 1998. As a result of this in 2003 she went on to start a new charity called Vision Care for Homeless People.  The charity has carried out over 7,000 eye examinations and dispensed spectacles to some of the most vulnerable people in the UK. She is now chair of the charity which runs three clinics in London, one in Birmingham and one in Brighton each week. They opened their alatest clinic in Manchester in May.

The Tour de France’s challenging first leg, which this year took place in the Yorkshire Dales, is attracting some committed optical cyclists keen to raise funds for Optometry Giving Sight and its supported charity, Vision Care for Homeless People. Elaine has signed up to cycle the tough first stage route from Leeds, riding across the Yorkshire Dales, to a stunning finish in the historic spa town of Harrogate. This will be a hilly 190 Km and the longest distance she has ever cycled in a day! Elaine will be setting off for the challenge on Sunday 24th August and has launched her Just Giving page so if you wish to support her charity you can click here.

“This is a great opportunity to “get on yer bike” and really raise awareness of the wonderful work that we are doing in providing vision correction for the dispossessed. The generous funding over the next three years by Optometry Giving Sight is vital for us and we are keen to get as many as we can pedalling for the cause,” said Elaine.

In May 2012 Elaine cycled from Land‘s End to John O‘Groats - 920 miles in 10 days! She raised over £5,000 for Vision Care For Homeless People. In 2013 she undertook an even bigger physical challenge - cycling over the Pyrenees from Biarritz on the Atlantic Ocean to Perpignan on the Mediterranean over some of the most famous Cols in the Tour de France. It was a very tough and rewarding week cycling 742 km with 14,353 m of climbing and raising a further £1,500.

Chloe Robson has participated in three Vision Aid Overseas projects travelling twice to Ethiopia and once to Burkina Faso. We would appreciate it if you could bring in your old spectacles which will be sorted and sent out to be reused.

Alastair Vere-Nicholl sought our expert advice when seeking eye protection for the Invesco-Perpetual Challenge Expedition Trans-Antarctica in aid of the Alex Roberts-Miller Foundation.
